A PICNIC WITH CHILDREN BECOMES A SUPER FUN EVENT
Eating with kids can be so simple once the picnic season starts: enjoy what you like in an informal context, nobody has to stay quiet and composed and even the laziest are easy to get moving. All with a little spirit of adventure.
Before you had children, you could have a spontaneous picnic in the summertime. A tablecloth, bread and wine bought at Lidl and there it was: the picnic with friends was ready to go. Or even a romantic rendezvous for two. Now you need to get organized in advance to make the picnic a success. Besides, you don't want to hear grumbling that the food is not good or something is missing, after all that work. Who would want to go back right away, just because something important is missing?
In summer don’t forget lots of water or juice, spray bug repellent, sunscreen or a product for wasp stings. Before leaving, you need a good picnic tablecloth with a thermal, waterproof bottom. Some are practical, fold easily, have carry handles and integrated straps. They can be carried by the children, thus giving them an important task to do. You’ll also need a picnic basket or something lighter like a bag that can hold all you need and of course, a cooler or thermal bag.
A colourful picnic basket for children: what to pack?
In addition to cutlery and plastic recyclable plates, you should prepare a good mix of savoury and tasty foods, which are also fresh and easy to prepare. Children love colourful vegetable sticks with a quark and yogurt sauce. That way they can nibble every so often while playing. They also like pretzels or sandwiches, maybe made on the spot with fresh cheese and butter.
As finger foods, frankfurters and fruit are ideal. Berries and grapes are easy to put on a skewer. A tasty snack can be made by adding a cube of cheese. Fruit salad with a squirt of lemon is very refreshing. Anything that goes bad quickly or melts should be avoided, such as lettuce leaves, mayonnaise and the home-made cream pie. Well-loved are watermelon lollipops, pieces of watermelon cut into triangles and placed on a stick: to lick just like ice cream. Even cakes can be eaten this way, no plates or cutlery. Just cut them into small pieces and add a stick and they’re ready. Don't forget napkins, wet wipes and garbage bags! You can find everything you need for a successful picnic at your nearby Lidl.
What’s still missing? Outdoor games!
You should always have a small portable first aid kit for emergencies: so the fun doesn’t have to finish too quickly! You need to include: adhesive bandages, wound cream, a product for insect bites, disinfectant spray, sunscreen and bug spray.
Nature is an immense playground: children play with whatever they find. They naturally collect sticks, stones and other objects. They climb trees, build things with what they’ve found or splash in water.
A successful picnic is only complete if it includes outdoor games. Games which are loved by children include outdoor classics such as Kubb, Viking combat, hula hoop, the frisbee, beach volleyball and games with a sticky ball.
Kubb is a game of skill in which two teams try to use a stick to bring down the wooden cubes (called Kubb) of the opposing team. It is very simple and you can have fun for hours.
There are also outdoor games that are not heavy to carry. A blast, even for four-year-olds, is ping pong with water balloons. Children throw a balloon filled with water back and forth and see in whose hands it breaks first!
Even a slackline is a great pastime for children and adults. Just stretch it from tree to tree and start the balancing act. And finally, just relaxing is a good idea. After a long day outdoors and a tummy full of picnic treats you can unwind in a comfortable hammock. With our best wishes for a good rest and lots of cuddling!
