What is Friend of the Sea?
Friend of the Sea is a non-profit, non-governmental organisation (NGO), committed to the conservation of marine habitats by improving the global sustainability of seafood. This commitment is put into practice through their international certification schemes for sustainable fisheries and aquaculture products.
What does the Friend of the Sea label stand for?
The Friend of the Sea brand name is a label applied on all certified articles, guaranteeing that it refers to products which are fished and raised respecting the ecosystem, workers and all vessel crews.
The principles of Friend of the Sea:
Friend of the Sea criteria follow the UN FAO - Guidelines for the Eco-labelling of Fish and Fishery Products from Marine Capture Fisheries. In particular, only products from stocks which are not overexploited and fish farms with low environmental impact can be certified.
Sustainable products and their origins are audited on site by accredited independent certification bodies against Friend of the Sea criteria, to verify they…
…operate in total respect of the marine environment and of workers
…avoid the use of destructive gears and the bycatch of endangered species
…prevent overexploitation of marine resources
